What makes the Mac app different

The Mac client of Telegram was rewritten in Swift and feels genuinely at home on macOS. It uses the same rounded window chrome as the system apps, supports full-screen mission control, respects the system-wide dark mode toggle and integrates with Focus modes to silence non-priority chats.

Install Telegram for Mac (Apple Silicon) step by step

  1. Press the download button to open the official macOS distribution page.
  2. Download the .dmg or .zip archive. Once mounted, drag the Telegram app into your Applications folder.
  3. Launch the app. On first run, macOS may ask you to confirm you want to open it — click Open.
  4. Sign in with the phone number tied to your Telegram account and enter the confirmation code sent to another session.
  5. Enable notifications when prompted so incoming messages appear in Notification Center.

Mac-only productivity features

  • Tabs. Open several chats side by side in one window — perfect on wide external displays.
  • Menu bar quick send. Attach the screenshot you just took, or paste text directly from the clipboard.
  • Widgets. Pin favorite chats or unread counts to Notification Center.

Automatic updates on macOS

The Mac app checks for updates every time you launch it and downloads them silently in the background. You can also trigger a manual update from Telegram → Check for updates. If you install Telegram from the Mac App Store, updates go through your normal App Store update flow instead.

Safety, permissions and privacy

The first time you send a photo or record a voice message, macOS asks for permission to access the camera, microphone or Photos library. You can revisit these decisions in System Settings → Privacy & Security. Telegram never stores your chats on the local disk in plain text; the cache is encrypted and can be flushed from Settings → Advanced → Data and Storage.

Troubleshooting the Mac app

If the app refuses to launch, hold Option while opening it to bypass Gatekeeper the first time. Corrupt caches can be cleared by quitting Telegram and deleting the ~/Library/Group Containers/*.Telegram folder — your chats will resync from the cloud on the next launch.
