Telegram download & install questions

Short, direct answers to the questions we hear most about installing Telegram, signing in across devices and staying safe when downloading installers. Can't find your answer? Head to the blog for longer walkthroughs.

  1. Q1

Is downloading Telegram from this site safe?

Yes. Every platform page routes its download through our secure content-delivery layer, which mirrors the byte-for-byte official release. After installing, you can inspect the digital signature on Windows and macOS, or hash-check the APK on Android — the fingerprints match the ones published by the Telegram team.

  2. Q2

Which Telegram edition should I install first?

Start with whatever matches your primary device. If you use a PC as your daily driver, install Telegram Desktop for Windows. On a Mac, grab the native macOS build. Then add mobile: the iOS app or Android APK. For temporary access, use Telegram Web.

  3. Q3

Do I need to create an account or pay anything?

No. Telegram is a free service. You do not create an account before downloading; instead you install the app and, on first launch, enter your phone number to receive a one-time login code. There are no in-app purchases required to use the messenger.

  4. Q4

Can I use Telegram on multiple devices at the same time?

Yes — that is the whole point of Telegram's cloud architecture. Sign in with the same phone number on Windows, Web, macOS, iOS and Android; every session is independent, and every chat, photo or voice message stays synchronised in near real time. You can review and terminate sessions from Settings → Devices.

  5. Q5

The installer won't open on Windows — what should I do?

Windows SmartScreen occasionally shows a warning for freshly published binaries. Click More info → Run anyway, or right-click the file, choose Properties → Digital Signatures and confirm the certificate is valid before you continue. If you still see a warning, download the installer again from the Windows page — network hiccups can corrupt the file.

  6. Q6

Why does Android say the APK is from an unknown source?

Android requires an explicit per-app permission to sideload packages outside of the Play Store. When your browser or file manager triggers the install, the system will ask you to enable Install unknown apps for that specific app. Grant it, allow the install, then revoke the permission from Settings → Apps → Special access for extra hygiene. See the full walkthrough on the Android page.

  7. Q7

How do I sign in without receiving the SMS code?

When you already have Telegram installed on another device, the login code arrives inside the app as a message from Telegram. Only when no session is online does Telegram fall back to SMS. On the login screen, wait for the SMS timer to hit zero and then tap Send code via SMS. If your carrier keeps blocking the SMS, try again on Wi-Fi — the request is retried through Telegram's network.

  8. Q8

Does Telegram cost anything or show ads?

Telegram is free. There are no ads in private chats, groups or the apps themselves. In large public channels the platform shows occasional sponsored messages which are unrelated to your data; these can be hidden by subscribing to Telegram Premium, which also unlocks extra sticker packs and larger uploads.

  9. Q9

How can I verify the file I just downloaded is authentic?

On Windows, right-click the .exe and open Properties → Digital Signatures. On macOS, run codesign -dv --verbose=4 /Applications/Telegram.app in Terminal to inspect the signing team. On Android, compute the SHA-256 hash of the APK and compare it to the fingerprint documented on the respective platform page.

  10. Q10

Where can I read setup guides and tips?

Visit the Telegram download blog. We publish setup walk-throughs, release notes and productivity tips written for people who use Telegram every day across multiple devices.
